This particular recipe has been long overdue but this year I finally got it up on the blog. I suppose considering the fact that there are loads of similar recipes already online it seems to be more for myself and my little catalogue of recipes rather than the audience.
Having said that, I hope you do appreciate the detail I go to when testing and writing up recipes as I’m trying to do it from the point of view of a person who has completely no clue and pretty much just climbed out from under a rock. 😉
I take your hand and step-by-step we do it together and as devil is in the detail, who doesn’t like a helping hand?
Anyways, point made and now onto the recipe.
Homemade Elderflower Cordial
(Elderflower Syrup)
With elderflower season only fleeting, the time is now to go foraging for these sweetly scented blooms.
Once you identify the best spots with elder trees which are ideally away from the road, with flowers that are easy to reach but not too low (you don’t want them christened with dog’s wee) and somewhere along public footpath (although you can always ask landowner permission if they’re not) you’ve won half the battle.
Now, go back on a sunny day, late morning, once dew dried up and flowers still smell sweet and not like cat’s wee (I do apologies for all the wee references in this post) and get picking.
Read my Elderflower Foraging Tips and once you bring your loot home, get making your cordial straight away!
What a wonderful treat! I hope you enjoy the process as much as the flavour of this homemade concoction which really is far superior from the shop bought stuff plus so much cheaper too!
Do let me know how you got on and what’s your favourite way of enjoying it.
I’m a simple creature hence touch of cordial diluted in some sparkling water, extra lemon! Cheers!
I hope you feel inspired now to go and look for some elderflowers and embark on making this simple cordial.
Make it this weekend thing, get yourself and your family out for a little adventure and even if you don’t find any, time in nature will do you heck of a lot of good!
